The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre provides free legal advice to members of the public, staff and students at Queen Mary University of London. The types of issues we can assist with are wide ranging but include:
- where you are privately renting and your home is in a state of disrepair;
- whether you can copyright or protect your creative work from use by others;
- advice if a child in your household has been excluded from school and need to bring a Special Educational Needs appeal;
- what you should consider if you need to get a divorce and or are in a child contact dispute;
- where you have been a victim of a criminal offence or are being accused on one; or
- if you need help with wills and probate advice.
The Centre also offers a number of community projects, in Tower Hamlets and Greater London:
- SPITE for Schools (educating young people in local secondary schools on the law and issues surrounding the illegality of sharing of intimate images);
- I am You (teaching primary school children about the Equality Act through interactive workshops);
- Freedom Law Clinic (working on potential miscarriages of justice in relation to criminal appeals);
- Social Welfare Benefits projects (form filling assistance for PIP and ESA, help with Mandatory Reconsideration and representation in the First Tier Social Security Tribunal); and
- the Prisoner Property Project (helping prisoners with missing/lost/damaged property).
Our law students work under the supervision of qualified lawyers, interviewing clients, analysing their legal problems and researching the issues involved in their client’s case.
Clients are then sent a written letter of advice, normally within two weeks of the initial interview.
